The act of “leading” implies the ability to improve processes, solve problems, and inspire people. Leaders vary in their relative ability to do each of these, and a given individual can vary how well they do each of these depending on context. A short-term sprint with high expectations energizes some leaders, while such conditions intimidate others. Leadership training is a combination of building an individual’s self awareness of what contexts and skills are their strengths/weaknesses, as well as specific skill building on a number of potential behaviors.
While “off the shelf” leadership training is available from Dr. Rao, the ideal circumstance is to customize the organization’s leadership program to reflect the strategy of the company and the needed competencies to succeed in that strategy.
Among the many possible curriculum modules for a leadership development program are:
- Balancing duties of execution, people development, and inspiring others
- Understanding an individual’s “foundations of authority”
- Managing superstars and managing underperformers
- The eight contexts of leadership
- The seven neuro-linguistic elements of effective leadership communications
- Leading operational improvement through application of lean manufacturing and six sigma
- Delegating, issue prioritization, conducting meetings, process management skills
- Models of mentoring
